The Sunrayce 97 event was very similar to the 1995 event. Again sponsored by GM and the Department of Energy, the route was substantially the same as 1995.

Route

Sunrayce 97 followed almost the same route as 95 and had the same 9 day schedule with 8, 1-day stages and one rest day. The event ran about 1250 miles from Indianapolis, IN to Colorado Springs, CO.

• June 19: Indianapolis, IN to Terre Haute, IN
• June 20: Terre Haute, IN to Effingham, IL to Godfey, IL
• June 21: Godfrey, IL to Louisiana, MO to Fulton, MO
• June 22: Fulton, MO to California, MO to Lee’s Summit, MO
• June 23: Rest Day
• June 24: Lee’s Summit, MO to Topeka, KS to Manhattan, KS
• June 25: Manhattan, KS to Glasco, KS to Smith Center, KS
• June 26: Smith Center, KS to Oberlin, KS to St. Francis, KS
• June 27: St. Francis, KS to Anton, CO to Limon, CO
• June 28: Limon, CO to Colorado Springs, CO
