Collegiate level solar car racing began in 1990 with the GM Sunrayce USA and has continued to evolve through the years. Race regulations are modified regularly to add new challenges and encourage innovation as technology keeps improving.
With each new vehicle, teams continue to push the envelope of what is possible with solar energy. This has led to a rich heritage for the competition which has seen many very unique vehicle designs over the years. Some solar car teams are well established and have a long history of participating in the American Solar Challenge (ASC) and Formula Sun Grand Prix (FSGP), while others are relatively new to the sport. Regardless of experience level, the competition is full of officials and enthusiasts who want to see every registered team succeed.
