Introduction to the American Solar Challenge

The American Solar Challenge (ASC) is a competition to design, build and race solar-powered cars in a cross-country event.

ASC promotes:

  • A greater understanding of solar energy technology, its environmental benefits and its promise for the future;

  • Educational excellence in science, engineering and mathematics—and the creative integration of technical and scientific expertise across a range of disciplines;

  • And, a "hands-on" opportunity for students and engineers to develop and demonstrate their technical and creative abilities.

In ASC, safety is the first priority. Each team must put its car through demanding qualifying and technical inspections, and each solar car must be led and followed during the rayce by a safety vehicle sporting rooftop hazard flashers. An official observer to keep teams alert to any safety issues will accompany each solar car caravan. The teams also will be shepherded through potentially hazardous areas by ASC Safety Escorts, who provide early warning of problems along the route.
